The Berserker by Jenika Snow

https://amzn.to/2SE5e4E
Greta

Berserkers.

They were known to be the fiercest of all Norse warriors, charging into battle in a wild frenzy, no protection except the weapon they held in their hand.

Said to have the spirit of a wild animal inside of them, they were feared … revered.
And I had fallen in love with one.

Calder

I was a wanderer, a free spirit. I was paid to track and hunt, to kill. It’s what I did, how I survived. And I loved every minute of it.

But I found myself going to the same village because of one person … Greta.

I shouldn’t want her. She’s far too innocent for the likes of me, more animal, more feral than the fiercest of Vikings. But I can’t stop myself from being drawn to her.

And then she’s taken from me.

I’ll track her, hunt her down and bring her back. But that’s not all I’ll do.

Once Greta is back in my arms, I’m claiming her and never letting her go.

Warning: This story is totally wild and unrealistic. It holds no actual historical facts and is purely for reading enjoyment in all its craziness. It’s filthy and sexy, features a totally over-the-top hero who only has eyes for one woman, and he'll do whatever it takes to make her his. If you didn’t like Vikings before now, that’s about to change. *wink*

Sometimes this is just the kind of book that you need. It’s kind of like a sharp, satisfying shot of espresso when you’ve been drinking a lot of cappuccinos and lattes.

At just 66 pages long - I devoured this book in one sitting and felt fully satisfied once I hit the end. You’re gripped from the start and there are no slow parts or much back story, making this a real page turner.

Despite the short length - you easily get to know the characters and root for them. Oh, except for the bad guy - I happily hated him and was hoping for his comeuppance for his dastardly deeds! Greta was a sweet, shy girl but she was no pushover. She wasn’t a dumb, damsel in distress that needed saving by a big, strong, sexy warrior. But since there’s a big, strong, sexy warrior who wants her with a fierce passion and wants to save her - what’s a girl to do but let him?

I love it when a strong, silent man - especially one who feels unworthy of the love of a good woman - finds his match and his happiness. Calder was such a man and I was so pleased for him to get his happy ever after! Much pleased sighing.

I wondered if the sex scenes would just be tacked on at the end of the action almost as an aside - since our couple aren’t properly introduced until the start of the story. I was happy that they weren’t but, to be honest, when they’re this good - who really cares where in the story they come!?

I’m not a fan of anal sex so normally just skip these parts in a book. Unfortunately for me - it was the epilogue that contained these scenes so skipping them wasn’t really an option as you know how much I adore an epilogue! I would love it if I could find a filthy, sexy book that didn’t think anal was the ultimate step in intimacy - but that’s just a personal thing.

The author herself mentions that this is a quick and dirty, wham-bam sort of book. While she says it doesn’t focus on historical accuracy - I was still pleased that none of the characters were texting each other or using zips or what not. It might not be true to the period but it’s still done with some thought which makes me happy.

Overall this is a quick, espresso shot of a read - short, sharp, sexy and fun. Definitely a good choice to keep things interesting. 4 stars.

The Viking's Touch by Joanna Fulford

http://amzn.to/298mZRXHis old life shattered, Wulfgar Ragnarsson lives only for the moment, cheating death and growing rich as a legendary mercenary. His heart may be frozen, but his desire burns hot for courageous widow Lady Anwyn, who needs his protection....

For the safety of her son, Anwyn will risk everything. Even giving herself to a Viking warrior who teaches her not all men are monsters--although he shows little sign that he will ever again be capable of love.

------------------------

Upon reading the inscription in this book I found that it appears to be the sequel to The Viking's Defiant Bride however this book stands completely alone so you can still enjoy it even if you know nothing of the first story.

From the outset I was charmed by this book and the writing style. I'm not sure whether all the language was completely correct to the time period but it was still engaging and the interactions interesting.

Anwyn was a likeable character - strong and defiant but still true to her time period and never becoming a stereotype. Wulfgar is my favourite type of hero - someone who is strong and tough but with a sensitive core and that is crying out for the love of a good woman. The pair had great chemistry and as such I would have liked the love scenes to be a little more in depth.

The story itself kept me interested and I always wanted to carry on reading just a little bit more each time. The ending was wonderful and a good culmination of everything that had happened throughout the story.

Overall, if you like tales of Vikings and the women that tame their hearts and enjoy a good romance then I really think you will like this story so it's one I would recommend to you. 4 stars.

The Captive by Joanne Rock

http://amzn.to/29Hm4gW
Women should be sweet, mild mannered...docile. Unfortunately, Lady Gwendolyn, a rich Saxon widow, is none of those things.

And Viking warrior Wulf Geirsson wants her desperately! One glimpse of the brazen beauty scrambling over the castle ramparts, and he knows he has to have her. Especially when she takes a tumble and lands at his feet.

But Wulf quickly finds that taking Gwendolyn and keeping her are two different things. And once she decides to engage in a seductive assault of her own, he's the one captivated....

------------------------

When I first started to read this book I assumed it would be all strong, brawny Vikings raiding English villages, stealing away innocent maidens and sailing on the high seas. So I was more than a little surprised when the story was actually a lot slower than the mad paced adventure I thought it would be.

That's not necessarily a bad thing though as it gave you time to get to know the characters. Gwendolyn was a delight. She was a strong woman who knew her own mind but still had insecurities, faults and while being impulsive, was sensible with it. Wulf was the strong, silent type and while I knew he was a tough leader, he did tend to be a lot softer and calmer than you might expect a Viking warrior to be. Together the couple worked well and they had some good chemistry although not as hot as some I have read.

The story held me from beginning to end and I did enjoy the battle of wills between Wulf and Gwendolyn. The ending was wrapped up nicely and overall this was an enjoyable story that I very much enjoyed. If you enjoy a Viking romance without too much war or wickedness then I would recommend this book to you. 4 stars.

Taken by the Viking by Michelle Styles

http://amzn.to/29rF12xA Viking raid

They claimed they came in peace, but soon Lindisfarne was aflame. Annis of Birdoswald fled in fear, but she could not escape the Norse warriors. An honorable captor One man protected her–Haakon Haroldson. The dark, arrogant Viking swept Annis back to his homeland, taking her away from all she held dear.

A new life–as his mistress! Now Annis must choose between the lowly work that befits a captive, or a life of sinful pleasure in the Viking's arms!

------------------------

This is the first of three novels all connected by the raid at Lindisfarne coming before Viking Warrior, Unwilling Wife and The Viking's Captive Princess. While they share similar characters and back story, each are entirely stand alone.

Annis is a strong woman who knows her own mind but her insecurities and worry make her much more than a stereotype. Haakon is the strong Viking Jaarl who tries desperately to keep control of his headstrong captive and his own heart. The pair had chemistry and although the sex scenes weren't scorching, they were still nicely sexy. If I could have changed one thing, I would have liked to have Haakon show just a little more emotion when it came to his feelings for Annis - even if that was in private. Despite that, the ending was lovely and had me sighing!

The story was very rich in detail and it was obvious that the author not only did a lot of research into the time period but also put her heart into ensuring historical accuracy. At the end of the book she explains some of the points of note and lists the books she found useful which is an interesting touch and good if you are interested in learning more about the history of the Vikings.

Overall, this was an enjoyable story to pass the time and one that I would recommend if you enjoy a Viking romantic adventure. 4 stars.
