Falling for the Cowboy by Kennedy Fox

https://amzn.to/2UwJhVP

Never trust a man who wears nothing more than a cowboy hat and ripped jeans who asks if you’d like to save a horse and ride a . . . well, you get the picture.

That should’ve been enough for me to walk away.

I’ve been warned on several occasions about southern men—with their sexy accents, charming manners, and the ability to easily get any woman in bed—which is something I’ll be avoiding.

Being a professional photographer has many perks—traveling around the world, calling all the shots, and working with subject matter that isn’t bad to look at—but Colton Langston with his washboard abs and baby blue eyes, could care less about my current project. He’s trouble, I know it, and he’s determined to make me work for every single photo. When I’m forced into riding lessons, I get way more than I ever bargained for, and by the time my trip is over, I’m in too deep.

Being with him was thrilling, but falling for him was unpredictable.
And ignoring him will be impossible.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the third in Kennedy Fox’s Bedtime Reads series - steamy, full-length, standalone love stories filled with humour, insta-lust, blistering heat, and a fast-pace. It says you can read them in one sitting - and while that’s technically true, they’re all approximately 250 pages which isn’t as short as this tagline might suggest.

While this is a standalone book, it returns to the Circle B ranch from Kennedy Fox fan favourite Bishop Boys series. I’ve never read those books but I can totally see why fans will get so excited to return to see these gorgeous and funny brothers. John and Jackson are the only ones mentioned - except for all 4 Bishop wives - but none of the couples together to my recollection. Regardless, fans will rejoice and new readers like me will be intrigued by this fun-loving bunch of characters and want to read more.

This book is sort of enemies-to-lovers but the pair’s sparring and bickering is more like foreplay than any kind of real anger and hatred. And I found that quite refreshing, especially from a hero. Colton was a real cutie. He was laidback, quick with a joke, quick to tease - oh and hot as hell, of course! I could really see why Presley was so at ease with him - and also why she got so irritated and frustrated with him. Their interactions were fun and flirty.

Presley was definitely my kind of girl. She was sassy and sarcastic. She rolled her eyes, smirked and was cheeky to Colton at any and all opportunities. On the first page when she swears, flips the bird and generally gets annoyed at rubbish drivers - I knew I’d found a heroine soulmate. It definitely takes skill to write someone like Presley without making her unlikable - and the fact that I loved her means she was exceptionally well written.

I also liked that Presley was written as a curvy girl who was mostly comfortable in her own skin. She had a few hangups - don’t we all? - but this theme wasn’t overplayed and it all felt true to life and believable. It didn’t hurt that Colton clearly adored every inch of Presley - melting away any insecurities she may have had.

The book was a nice blend of sexy. In fact, in parts it was fan yourself delicious. And that’s also where the book dropped a star for me. It was well into the book when Colton and Presley even had their first kiss. With all the heat and dirty shenanigans that came later in the book, I would have loved to have seen that spread out throughout the book. There was a lot of chaste build-up followed by a section of, well, less chasteness. Seeing how good the latter parts were - I wish there had been more!

This is the kind of book that excellently marries the sweet, true-love with some pleasing sexiness. I enjoyed every page, was always keen to keep on reading and very much enjoyed the banter and the ease of the writing and the story. This was a great introduction to Kennedy Fox and a great bedtime read. 4 stars from me and a book I’d happily recommend to fans and new readers alike.
And if you want to read more books set on the Bishop Brother’s Circle B ranch, Braxton (who appears in this story) will be (hopefully) getting his own HEA in Roping the Cowboy which will first be on the Read Me Romance podcast on February 25th 2019 and released in e-book to buy in mid-June.

Hot Buttons: death, cancer, child neglect touched upon <-- highlight to reveal (may contain spoilers)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I always enjoy a cowboy romance - especially an opposites attract. Here we have city-girl Ava coming down to Texas and sparring with rough and tumble cowboy, Beau. What gave it a little extra in this department was that Ava, while liking her city comforts, was very much an independent, well-rounded kinda girl who didn’t let country life phase her. It’s nice to see a familiar trope without the usual cliches.

Speaking of the characters - I very much enjoyed Ava. As I said, she was smart, sharp and sassy. Making it in the male-dominated world of architectural construction (or something like that!) but still coming across as vulnerable and very real - I could see myself being friends with her. When she was annoyed at Beau and giving him the silent treatment - but couldn’t stop being polite to him even if she growled it through clenched teeth; these little things made me root for her while also laugh at how likely it all was.

Beau was your typical cowboy - but that’s hardly a complaint from me. He wanted what he wanted - liked what he liked - and those traits made me like him. However, I felt that I only really got glimpses of his personality and his soul. I would have liked more of him.

Another reviewer put it perfectly when she said that the love declaration was a little abrupt. It surprised me so much that I actually scrolled back to see if I’d missed a few chapters. Up until that moment Ava and Beau seemed to only have spent minimal time together and had barely a few kisses. While I enjoy sex in my romance novels, it’s by no means something that I require in order to enjoy a story. Unfortunately, for this book, I felt that it was an element that was definitely missing. It needed something else - be it romance or sex - just to lift this to the next level for me. To make me truly believe.

Ava’s trip to Texas all comes about due to her friend’s death bed request. A death bed request that we hear about right at the start of the novel. That was a rough way to start a book and I debated giving up right there and then. It just hit too close to the bone to immediately read the death of a 20-something from cancer.

And I also didn’t see the need for the Donnie storyline in the book. It takes up only a little time in the book but I would have preferred to read about Ava and Beau rather than a random kid. Presumably his own journey will continue in other books but I would have been happy enough if those elements weren’t included.

The ending was cute as a button and overall I easily sped through this fairly short book (I would guess at about 225 pages as I can’t seem to find an official page count while writing this review). It didn’t hit all the marks for me but was a pleasant way to pass a few hours. 3 stars for a cute cowboy and city girl gone country.

COVER REVEAL: What It Takes to Fall by C.R. Ellis

ELLIOT

Happily settled into my new position at FMK Weddings, I never expected to be presented with the career opportunity of a lifetime. And I definitely wasn’t expecting it to mean working with Bryce McKnight.
Bryce was the heart and soul of my childhood—my best friend.

Until life pulled us apart and we lost touch.

Our friendship picks up right where it left off—complete with colorful trash talking and wagers on Mario Kart showdowns—only, I’m pretty sure friends don’t make out in parking lots or have naked sleepovers…

BRYCE

The first time we met, I won Elliot Kincaid’s trust with candy and card games.

After everything I’ve done, it’ll take a lot more to win her heart.

Fortunately, I love a good challenge.

With so much at stake for us both, I know Elliot thinks we’re setting ourselves up for heartbreak.

I’ll just have to show her that our friendship was always meant to be the foundation of our forever.

If you’re planning on falling in love…

When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the spark—the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. She’s yoga pants, he’s a suit. She’s a tattoo artist, he’s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.

You’d better be sure…

Caleb doesn’t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, he’s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. He’s never worried about it before—not until he finally gets behind Sadie’s armor and begins to fall.

Someone is there to catch you.

Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what they’re each willing to risk.

Title: Playing for Keeps
Author: Jill Shalvis
Series: Heartbreaker Bay
Pages: 384
Genre(s): Contemporary, US
Hot Buttons: self-harm <-- highlight to reveal (may contain spoilers)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a huge fan of Jill Shalvis - there’s something about the way she writes, the worlds she builds and the characters she creates that makes you happy. That makes you feel like you’re part of everything that’s going on in the books. But it’s all done with an ease that you don’t realise you’ve been sucked in until you lift your head and the day has passed you by.

I’ve missed a couple of the more recent Heartbreaker Bay books (for some unknown reason) but each of these books stand alone and you don’t have to read them in any particular order. Characters from other books do pop up but they never confuse you - they only make you want to go back and find their particular books and read their own love stories.

The story of this book is fairly simple. Seemingly opposite boy and girl meet and have an attraction. They dance around the attraction. They overcome the obstacles to fall in love. But that simple storyline is given depth and interest by the amazing characters of Caleb and Sadie.

There was just something about Sadie that spoke to me and touched my heart. I don’t want to pigeon hole her when I say she was quirky, had baggage and suffered with mental health problems. She was so well-rounded. A tough girl on the outside - but one who’d always felt misunderstood or maybe just overlooked, while on the inside she was crying out for love. I identified so hard with her that I willed her to get over herself and let herself fall in love with Caleb.

Speaking of Caleb - yu-um! He was both the hottest and the cutest. He was everything. He too had a depth and a bit of an edge - and I so desperately wanted to want him for myself. But alas, you could see that Caleb and Sadie were a perfect match. No-one understood and ‘got’ Sadie as much as Caleb did and I wouldn’t want to take that away from them!

And I can’t forget the best character in the whole book. Lollipop. My heart swelled a million times whenever that cutie-pie was in a scene. She stole the show!

This book has the sparkle and fun of a Jill Shalvis book with great, well-rounded and real characters. Caleb and Sadie stole the show with their chemistry, their banter and their true love. It’s a fantastic addition to the series and one I very much enjoyed. 5 stars.
