Title: Better Than Sexy (previously known as Sexy Mine)
Author: Carly Phillips
Series: Sexy Series (Book 3)
Pages: 248
Genre(s): Contemporary, US
Hot Buttons: /

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Better Than Sexy is the third book in Carly Phillips’ Sexy Series. The heroes of all three books are best friends and co-owners of the hottest club in New York. While there is a common storyline and ‘enemy’ between all three books, they each stand completely alone. You do not need to have read the first two to understand and enjoy this one.

The other thing these friends have in common is the near insta-love they experience when they meet their women. Insta-love probably isn’t the right term. It’s more that the heroes meet the heroines and instantly want them, know it’s something special and want to pursue a more meaningful relationship with them. So if insta-love isn’t really your thing, I think you’ll still be fine with this one.

When I first read the blurb for this book and found out who the heroine was - I was inclined to dislike her. Having read the first two books in the series and knowing the back story of the three heroes and the tragedy that bonded them and led to the creation of their club - how could I like the sister of Landon’s brother’s killer?

Very easily, as it turns out. Ms Phillips has a way with her writing that made me instantly fall for Vivi. She was dynamic, talented, interesting with just the right blend of vulnerability and determination. And my love for her only increased when you realise the lengths she goes to to not hurt Landon, his partners or his family.

And of course I loved the determined, alpha Landon - even when he was being a douche. His relationship with his business partners also showed the man he was and the way he battled his feelings for Vivi. I loved their camaraderie, banter and loyal friendship. His hotness doesn’t hurt either, I suppose!

There are some fairly painful things going on for our characters but it never bogs the story down. In fact, this story fairly zipped along and I all but devoured the pages. Ms Phillips is one of my go-to readers for interesting romances with characters filled with integrity and heart. I also enjoy that you read the blurb and you think you know how the story will proceed and where the conflict will come from. And I would still enjoy the story if that were the case but Ms Phillips manages to surprise me and slightly change up the story, avoiding the obvious and intriguing me enough to continually want to keep reading. She always delivers.

And boy does she deliver on the sex, too. She is one of the best at writing the sexy times - the only time in her books where the pages are turned slowly since they’re so darn hot.

I thought this would be the last book in the Sexy series since we’ve now had happily ever afters for all three friends/business partners. However, it appears there’ll be another - the story of Amber who we meet briefly in this book. That’s a nice surprise and I’ll look forward to seeing her get her own HEA.

Carly Phillips is onto another winner with this quick, dirty and satisfying story. If you’re a fan of Ms Phillips - you’ll love it. If you’re not a fan - you will be after reading this story. 5 stars and recommended.

This book was previously titled Sexy Mine but it’s the same book and no matter its name this is the first time it’s been published [2020].

EXCERPT!

“So this is the bedroom,” she said, looking around the immaculate space.

“Yes, it is. Feel free to put your own touches on it for as long as you’re here.”The decorator had pulled together an apartment for three single men.

She treated him to a generous smile. “Thank you.”

Knowing he’d be tempting himself and not caring, he stepped closer until her feminine fragrance filled his nostrils. They stared at each other for a long, charged moment, desire he couldn’t escape building inside him.

She met his gaze and her lips parted. It wasn’t an invitation, but her eyes still held his, and she wasn’t backing away either.

He slid his hand behind her neck, cupping her soft skin. “I know I’m your boss, so no pressure,” he said as he applied a bit to her skin. “But I want to kiss you.”

She paused. Looked up at him. Then rose onto her toes. His mouth met hers. Warm and willing, her soft lips glided against his and his entire body came alive. He tightened his grip on her neck as he slid his tongue into her waiting mouth. She tasted sweet and he deepened the kiss, wanting more of her. With a moan, her body leaned against his, her breasts pressing against his chest.

Their tongues meshed and mingled. Their harsh breathing filled the room. The kiss went on and he was in no rush to end the moment. But suddenly she gasped and pulled away.

“We shouldn’t,” she said, brushing her damp lips with her hand.

“Because…?”

She swallowed hard. “I just … I need to focus on my work,” she said, turning away so he couldn’t see her face.

He narrowed his gaze, wondering if something more was at play. A woman didn’t kiss him like she did, then back off that easily. But he also wasn’t going to push her. He’d see how things between them played out during her time here and take his cues from her. Which didn’t mean he wouldn’t play up the charm and test her resolve.

“I think the apartment will work out well.” She headed for the door.

“Do you need help moving in?”

“I’ve got it but thank you,” she said in a strained voice.

“Who’s helping?” he persisted.

“Well, Ellie. Owen wouldn’t get his hands dirty moving my clothing over. It’s fine. We’ve got it. She’s borrowing her parents’ car.”

He rolled his eyes. “I’ll be over at eight a.m. tomorrow and we’ll get you moved in.

”He wasn’t going to leave the two women to drag all her things alone back and forth up to the apartment.

“We’ll get me moved in?”

He grinned. “I’ve got partners, don’t I? All you need to worry about is packing your things up. We’ll handle the rest.”

“But–”

He placed a finger to her lips, and damned if her eyes didn’t darken with desire. She might be focused on her career, but she was interested in him as well.

The Two-Date Rule by Tawna Fenske

https://amzn.to/37UEt2B

Willa Frank has one simple rule: never go on a date with anyone more than twice. Now that her business is providing the stability she’s always needed, she can’t afford distractions. Her two-date rule will protect her just fine…until she meets smokejumper Grady Billman.

After one date—one amazing, unforgettable date—Grady isn’t ready to call it quits, despite his own no-attachments policy, and he’s found a sneaky way around both their rules.

Throwing gutter balls with pitchers of beer? Not a real date. Everyone knows bowling doesn’t count.

Watching a band play at a local show? They just happen to have the same great taste in music. Definitely not a date.

Hiking? Nope. How can exercise be considered a date?

With every "non-date" Grady suggests, his reasoning gets more ridiculous, and Willa must admit she’s having fun playing along. But when their time together costs Willa two critical clients, it's clear she needs to focus on the only thing that matters—her future. And really, he should do the same.

But what is she supposed to do with a future that looks gray without Grady in it?

How cute is that blurb? It ticks all my boxes for a sweet and enjoyable romance. And by and large it lives up to that promise.

This book was quirky, fresh and fun. I enjoyed Ms Fenske’s writing style and it was very readable and kept you interested in the story and the characters. While this is a cute storyline overall, there is still a little more depth here what with Willa’s background and childhood, and Grady’s own issues about the future. Oooh - I just realised that one’s afraid of the past and one’s afraid of the future. Ha! Pretty sure I should have realised that before now!

I was convinced that Tawna Fenske used to write for the Harlequin Blaze line - a line that I adored! - but I must have been mistaken. I think it’s a fair comparison to make as we have two strong characters who know what they want, good writing, interesting situations and some sizzling sex thrown in for good measure. While I’ll take any kind of hot sex in a book, I liked that while there’s the rush of lust with our main couple, it never seemed too soon or lacking emotion - since the pair had a connection from the first time Willa mistakes Grady for a stripper!

Willa herself is a strong, successful woman. She knows what her plan is and even knows how her childhood has moulded her as a person. On the surface, she’s not normally my kind of heroine as I sometimes feel a bit of shade when someone has their life together!! But Willa is very likeable in a lot of different ways. Her wonky pets, her quirks and anxieties, her honesty - and the way she doesn’t shy away from her attraction to Grady. She reacts like anyone would react when they find a hot guy who likes them but also has dating rules. She goes with the flow - even if she’s not comfortable.

Grady is most comfortable going with the flow and I loved the way he tried to cajole Willa into just one more non-date. It was so darn cute. He has his own journey but all the while he’s supportive of Willa and I love that. I also love that he’s hot and has a sexy job. And the man can knit!

The only reason that the story dropped a star for me was because I felt Willa freaked out one time too many regarding a future relationship with Grady. The ending did almost make me forget about that fact as it was just lovely. While I do sometimes like it when only one of our couple has to apologise and make amends - having them both make compromises and come together at the end made my little heart pitter pat and made me think that this couple would definitely last.

I’m excited to read the next book in this new series all about the hot Smokejumpers. I was intrigued by Kayla and Tony’s relationship in this current book. Are they a future couple? Or was that just a red herring? I’m interested to find out and will definitely be popping the next book onto my wishlist.

4 stars for this one and a recommended read.

Title: No Inhibitions
Author: Erika Wilde
Series: Dirty Sexy Fairytales Book 3
Pages: 167
Genre(s): Contemporary, US
Hot Buttons: child abandonment (before the book begins) <-- highlight to reveal (may contain spoilers)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the third book in the Dirty Sexy Fairy Tales stories by Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison). This one features a story very loosely based on Lady and the Tramp - or in my head ‘the well put together, glamorous girl’ and ‘a rough and ready, dirty contractor guy’. Either way - loving the premise!

As always, with an Erika Wilde story we get a well pulled together story that really keeps those pages turning; a couple that make you swoon and just enough of the sexy stuff to give you those happy tingles!

Our heroine, Tempest, was young (well young to me at only 24!) and vibrant. She was feisty, strong and went for what she wanted in business and in the bedroom. These kind of heroines, if I’m really honest, aren’t normally my favourite - I think because they have all the positives I wish I had - and none of the crippling anxiety and doubt! So I was genuinely surprised how much I loved her and wanted her to get what she sought. Not just in terms of Remy - but the love she desired and deserved. I can’t really say what it was about her that I enjoyed - she wasn’t brash but she was determined and I really admired her.

Remy on the other hand is my absolute jam. Dirty, dangerous, gruff, alpha, good with his hands…And so determined not to cave to his obvious desire for Tempest - because he was ultimately a big softie with a huge heart.

And together…gah - this couple gave me every feel I could ever want and then some. They were hot - oh so hot - but in an intimate way that expressed the start of something solid between the pair. I loved that there were no games between them, either. Often I find that this kind of back and forth, back and forth is added into stories purely for dramatic purposes when there’s otherwise not the depth of story or storytelling. With this couple, when they went in - they went full in. Swoonworthy to say the least.

As I mentioned, this story is part of a series of interconnected books but fear not, this book stands completely alone. Believe me, if it was a cliffhanger you would hear about it in the first sentence! The couples from the first two books in the series (Total Surrender and Absolute Pleasure) briefly appear in this one (separately, though) but there’s just enough teasing of the first two stories to make you want to read them, too.

Since Tempest is the last of the three Wilder siblings, at first I assumed this might be the last of the Dirty Sexy Fairytales. Now, as strange as it may sound, I really want Kyle’s story. Or just more of anything like this book and those that have come before. 5 stars.

EXCERPT!

“Hello, Remy,” she said in greeting when she finally reached him.

“Tempest,” he replied with a cordial nod.

She cocked her head playfully to the side, momentarily drawing his gaze to the way she’d swept her dark hair into an intricate style that was held together with crystal and pearl pins.  The elegant updo left her shoulders and slender neck bare, emphasizing the pair of sparkling ruby earrings hanging from her lobes.

“Dare I say you look like you’re about to bolt for the exit,” she said, a light accusation in her tone.

He inhaled a deep breath—big mistake—because the scent of her soft, feminine perfume went straight to his dick.  It took effort to remain outwardly unaffected, and for her, he allowed a smile to ease across his lips.  “Guilty as charged.”  He planned on doing exactly that as soon as she went on her way.

Her perfectly shaped brows furrowed in a concerned frown.  “Are you not having a good time?

“Don’t take this personally, but fairy tales are not my thing,” he replied, his tone wry.

“How do you know that for certain?” she countered, a flirtatious glimmer now sparking in her amber eyes.  “If you leave right now, you’ll never know if something magical might happen tonight.”

He huffed out a laugh at her whimsical, romantic notion, though the sound that erupted from his throat was as rough as sandpaper.  “I’m not looking for anything magical to happen.”  In fact, he’d do his best to avoid anything even remotely close to it.

She shrugged a smooth, bare shoulder.  “Sometimes, it’s better to leave all expectations and cynicism at the door and just see where the evening takes you.”

He shook his head in disagreement.  “Trust me when I say my cynicism is well earned.”  And now he was determined that all that skepticism would protect what little was left of his soul from being further ransacked.  “I was happy to come and support the Wilder Way Foundation, and now that I’ve done that, I think it’s best if I go.  Good night, Tempest.”

He started to walk away, but she grabbed at his tuxedo sleeve.  “Remy, wait.”

Not wanting to be rude, he stopped and glanced back at her.

The smile she gave him was so sweet and persuasive it made something in his chest shift ever so slightly.  “You can’t leave without having at least one dance.”

Oh, yes, he could, and he shored up his resolve against that imploring look of hers. “I don’t dance.”

The hand on his arm slid down, until her cool, slender fingers curled around his, not only startling him but ensnaring him in more ways than one.  “It’s a ballad,” she pointed out of the song Raevynn Walsh was now singing.  “Everyone can slow dance.  It takes minimal skill . . . unless you don’t trust yourself to stand that close to me?”

Her comment was underscored with a subtle challenge, an undeniable dare that alluded to the attraction between them that was getting increasingly difficult for him to resist.

“Just one dance,” she persisted oh so sweetly, her husky voice taking on a teasing lilt as she leaned in closer.  "I solemnly promise not to cast any kind of fairy-tale spell on you."

Bold and determined Tempest Wilder didn't give him another chance to turn her down.  With her hand secured in his, she pulled him toward the dance floor in front of the stage, which was already filled with other couples, and he would have looked like a jackass if he rebuffed her at this point.  Once she found a spot for the two of them, she turned back around and didn’t hesitate to step as close as their bodies would allow.

The provocative feel of her soft breasts pressing against his chest and her supple thighs skimming along his was like a fucking shock to his celibate system, and he automatically tensed in response to the sexy female curves aligning perfectly to his more masculine frame.  It was all he could do to keep his dick from getting hard as a spike against her lower stomach.

Still holding his one hand, she smoothed her other one up the lapel of his jacket and around his neck.  Clearly sensing his discomfort, she tipped her head back and gave him a flirty smile, no doubt meant to tease him.

“So, when it comes to slow dancing, the man usually puts his arm around the woman’s waist,” she suggested, since he hadn’t yet done so.  “And if he really likes the woman he’s with, he’ll splay his hand low on her back and pull her in close.”

Oh, he knew how to slow dance, but just the thought of putting his hands on her so intimately was wreaking havoc with his libido, and he had a feeling she was well aware of his predicament, too.  It was another sexy dare from her, and while he’d spent the past few years avoiding this kind of close contact with Tempest, the sexually starved man in him who desired this woman slipped past all his carefully erected walls.

Fuck it, he decided.  What could happen in a room full of people?  Giving in to the temptation to touch her, to enjoy the feel of her in his arms, even for a few minutes, he placed his hand on her bare back and slowly caressed his palm all the way down to the base of her spine.  The subtle pressure of his hand against her smooth skin drew her as close as the two of them could get, aligning their hips in a way that was suggestively carnal.

Breathing became difficult . . . He hadn’t been this close to a woman in over three years, and there was no denying she felt so damn good.  She was incredibly soft, she smelled like heaven, and she made him want to do something wild and wicked and uncharacteristic—like take her somewhere dark and private where he could give in to the lust clamoring inside him.

An unmistakable shiver coursed through her as they shifted in time to the slow song.  With her staring into his eyes, her own darkened with awareness as she moved her head to the side of his to speak into his ear.  “See, touching me wasn’t so bad, was it?”

“You’re bad,” he murmured, shocking himself with his own playful response when he’d been so indifferent to women for years.  It was as though this woman was rousing his sex drive, along with a more indulgent part of him, from a long, deep slumber.  The thought was both frightening and exhilarating.

She drew her head back and laughed.  To his surprise, the light, sensual sound eased the rest of the tension in his body, allowing him to just enjoy the moment with her.

She gave him a cheeky grin.  “Just for the record, Mr. Lowell, I can be very bad, depending on the circumstance.”
